Garnet is the birthstone for January. Most people are aware of the common dark red color that most garnets display. Their hardness of a 6 1/2 - 7 1/2 lends themselves to daily wear. Garnets are gemstones that are not treated producing their colors naturally. The common colors are affordable and inexpensive. The garnet celebrates the 2nd and 6th wedding anniversary. The garnet also represents truth and used for healing. During the Victorian Era the Bohemian Garnet Jewelry was prized and it is highly collectable.
My favorite are the rarest of them all, the Demantoid garnet which is a bright lime green color, very similar to a Peridot. Demantoid garnets are magnetic unlike their siblings due to the high iron content. They have a distinct clarity characteristic called a horsetail, because it actually looks like a horsetail. The Demantoid garnets have been known to be heat treated in the current material being mined. The Russian Demantoid's are highly sought after and collectable.
